FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is a tax refund?

A tax refund is the repayment of any tax that you may have overpaid during the tax year. We calculate your trading profits for the year and file your tax return with HMRC to show how much tax you should have paid, the refund is the amount you have been stopped every month, less the tax payable

2. Who is eligible for a Tax Refund claim?

Anyone who has lived and worked in the UK may be eligible to claim a tax refund, even up to 5 years after leaving the country. It is estimated that 1 in 3 are due a tax refund and to date, millions of Pounds in unclaimed tax is being held at the revenue office!

3. Why would I have overpaid tax?

We calculate your trading profits for the year and file your tax return with HMRC to show how much tax you should have paid, the refund is the amount you have been stopped every month, less the tax payable

There are many reasons you may have overpaid tax: e.g. if you only worked for part of a tax year; if you worked for more than one employer in a tax year; if you have had two or more jobs concurrently; if you were taxed on a basic rate tax code.

4. How much can I claim back?

This will depend entirely on your personal circumstances. The average tax claimed back is around £3,500!
If you have earned less than the ‘tax free allowance’ you will be able to claim back all the tax you’ve paid (as an example, the tax free allowance for 2020/21 is £12,500).  If your earnings exceed the ‘tax free allowance’, you are more than likely also due a tax refund.

5. When can I claim my tax back?

You should process your current tax refund claim at the end of any financial year (5th April). You can also claim for any previous tax year at any time.

6. How many years can I claim tax back for?

You may claim for a maximum of 4 years.

7. What do I need to claim tax back?

In order to claim a UK tax refund, you will need to submit a few documents that prove your earnings and tax deductions.

If you have worked under the CIS scheme, we’ll need your Statements of Payment for each employment and each month as well as proof of any expenses that you would like to have deducted. We will assess these and let you know if any of these cannot be claimed.

If you were an employee you will need a P45 for each job you’ve had during the tax year, as well as a P60 from the company you were employed with at the end of the tax year. These documents can be obtained from your employer or agency. If you have lost these forms, you will then need to obtain a “Statement of Earnings” from your employer or agency as a substitute.

If you received any benefits, you will need to submit a P11D form and if you claimed any dividends, you will need a dividend certificate for the relevant tax year.

If you are struggling to obtain these documents please contact us and we can help to obtain them from HMRC on your behalf

Some claims may exceed the expected completion time due to a lack of a permanent National Insurance number, providing incorrect or insufficient information and/or unavoidable delays caused by HMRC.

8. Where do I receive my refund?

We will establish where and how you would like to receive the funds before we process your claim. When we receive the refund issued by HMRC, we transfer your refund (minus our fee) to the bank account you nominated.

9. What is the financial year?

The financial year, commonly known as “the tax year”, runs from April the 6th until April the 5th of the following year. So as an example, the 2020/2021 tax year runs from 6 April 2020 – 5 April 2021

10. Will you deal with HMRC so I don't have to?

Put simply, yes – leave HMRC to us. We know how difficult it can be to get hold of HMRC and how little you enjoy dealing with them. Our team of tax specialists make literally thousands of calls to HMRC each year and know exactly which questions to ask. As part of our service we’ll register as your Agent – we’ll then be able to speak with HMRC on your behalf so you don’t have to saving you time and aggravation.

11. What if I don’t file my tax return

There’s basically no acceptable excuse for missing self assessment tax return deadlines, even if you don’t owe HMRC anything. If you miss the deadline there are a number of self assessment tax return penalties that you could be hit with:

  • £100 automatic fine for filing even a single day late,
  • £900 in penalties can stack up over the next three months
  • £3,000 for each year you can’t provide the necessary records
